Microsoft
FrontPage 2000
There are 2 methods which you can
use to publish your site using Microsoft FrontPage. Please choose the
best method for your situation, and carefully follow the provided
instructions.
Before publishing your site for
the first time, make sure to initialize your FrontPage extensions in
your Account Control Panel.
The FrontPage 2000 manual provides
in-depth tutorials on how to use FrontPage 2000 to publish to your site.
This documentation is intended to give you a brief overview. For detailed
documentation, please consult your FrontPage 2000 manual.
Method 1: Server-Side Editing
Server-side editing is the most straightforward method of uploading
your website. With this method, all modifications are made directly
to your website. You dynamically edit your documents online, and changes
you make are reflected instantly on your website. Users not already
familiar with FrontPage should use this method.

Method 2: Publishing
Publishing is slightly more involved. However, it allows you
to edit your documents offline (on your hard drive), uploading to your
website only when you choose. This provides a "staging area" for work,
making it easy to update your website once you're satisfied with the
changes you've made.

Helpful Hints
- Many problems are encountered when an FTP
program, such as CuteFTP or WS_FTP is used to upload files created
by FrontPage. This publishing method does not work; FrontPage's
dynamic components require that you use FrontPage to publish your
files.
- It is best not to use FTP to access
your site if you are using Microsoft FrontPage. You may inadvertently
change or delete FrontPage configuration files, which could corrupt
your FrontPage extensions. Advanced users can use FTP, however they
should avoid touching _vti_*, postinfo.html,
and .htaccess files.
- If FrontPage indicates that your website
does not exist, or that extensions are not installed, or if it opens
the "Microsoft Web Publishing Wizard" when you attempt to publish
your website, visit your control panel to make sure that your FrontPage
extensions have been initialized. Also, make sure that you are connected
to the Internet, and that you are publishing to http://www.yourdomain.com/.
The http:// is required.
- If FrontPage "loses" your navigation bars
or site structure when publishing with Method 2 above, log on to your
control panel and uninstall your FrontPage extensions, then reinitialize
them. Then, verify that your local copy has the appropriate navigation
bars, then re-publish your site. If the problem persists, contact
Microsoft FrontPage support.
- If you experience problems when following
these instructions, please provide the following information to your
Xenoplanet support representative: FrontPage version, which method
(above) you are using, exact error message(s).
